Continuing from 2016
This will be the second time that Kurashiki will host a G7 Summit-related ministerial meeting, following the G7 Education Ministers’ Meeting in Kurashiki in 2016. At the Education Ministers’ Meeting, we received high praise for utilizing the entire area of the National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area), where cultural and industrial heritage from the Edo period has accumulated. We would like to contribute to the success of the G7 Kurashiki Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting by making the most of our experience in holding the event and further improving our hospitality.

Kurashiki has a history of developing into a top-class manufacturing town in Japan through the integration of labor and employment. In 1889, the Ohara family, which laid the foundation for the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area by tackling social issues that lead to modern SDGs in the fields of health and labor, established Kurashiki Spinning Factory in 1889. From there, in the process of expanding into one of Japan’s leading large companies, we have developed advanced cultural, social, health and welfare projects in the region, and have worked on improving the occupational health environment ahead of the rest of the country.

Kurashiki Ivy Square, the main venue, is a place where such history remains. The modern industrial heritage site, which is a former spinning mill that has been restored to a complex cultural facility, is a perfect venue for the Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting.

Industrial development
A beautiful townscape that combines Japanese and Western styles. Large and small islands and a calm inland sea. Craftsmanship and polite lifestyles are alive with the spirit of praising practicality and simple appearance that are closely related to daily life as “beauty of use.”
Visitors to Kurashiki can feel the beauty of everyday life everywhere in the city.

The history of Kurashiki began 400 years ago, when land surrounded by large and small islands and the sea in the Seto Inland Sea was reclaimed and planted with salt-resistant cotton.
After that, cotton cultivation developed as a spinning and textile industry. Entrepreneurs who made their fortunes in the textile industry built Japan’s first private museum of western arts and folk art museums, and preserved and utilized beautiful townscapes. Kurashiki City is rich in history, culture and nature, such as the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area and the Setonaikai National Park, cutting-edge industries such as the Mizushima Rinkai Industrial Area, local industries such as the textile industry, and unique agricultural and marine products from each region. It has a wide variety of industries and regional resources such as I hope that this Ministerial Meeting will serve as an opportunity for people around the world to learn about the rich individuality and charm of Japan’s regional cities.

The area around Kurashiki Ivy Square, the venue, is located in a national important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, and you can enjoy buildings that have inherited various designs from the Edo period.

Another attraction of Kurashiki is that it takes about an hour by bullet train from Kyoto and Osaka to the east, and from Hiroshima, the site of the G7 Summit, to the west. It takes about three and a half hours from Tokyo. It takes about 35 minutes by bus from Okayama Momotaro Airport, which has regular international flights to Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taipei (Taoyuan). Kurashiki is easily connected to other parts of Japan and the world.

It is said that merchants in this area, who were rulers of the land, invited neighbors and acquaintances to their homes on the day of the festival, and served sushi with the highest quality ingredients. Barazushi, which is a combination of fresh and colorful seafood and seasonal vegetables, has its own characteristics for each family and region.
Fruit

The cultivation of fruit is also popular, taking advantage of the warm climate and abundant water. Muscat, known as the “Queen of Fruits” for its elegant sweetness and aroma and vivid emerald green, is the largest producer of heated muscat in Japan. White wine made only from muscat grapes is also popular.
The Tamashima area is also one of the leading production areas in the prefecture for peaches that represent Okayama, the kingdom of fruits. Okayama peaches, which are grown in a bag, are characterized by their white flesh and refined sweetness.
In addition, these muscat and white peaches were developed by the Ohara Shonokai Agricultural Research Institute (currently Okayama University Plant Science Research Institute), which was established by Magosaburo Ohara in 1914 and spread throughout the prefecture.

In addition, Japanese Spanish mackerel and mamagari are also famous in the waters around Okayama, where delicious fish are said to gather as the tidal currents mix and flow in with abundant nutrients from the three major rivers. Spanish mackerel is indispensable for barazushi, and mamakali comes from the fact that it is so delicious that you can borrow mamama (meal) from the neighbor’s house.

In the Tsurajima area of Kurashiki City, burdock cultivation began around 1947 on sandy soil on the site of an abandoned riverbed of a tributary of the Takahashi River, and the area is now one of the leading production centers in western Japan. In order to improve quality, the soil is diagnosed every year, and the soil is revitalized while paying attention to fertilizer ingredients. In addition, the soft, well-drained sandy soil produces sweet burdocks with white skin, little scum, soft flesh, and rich mineral content. Today, burdocks are harvested almost year-round.
